Ghazaraza
Statement
The submitted pieces are colourful depictions of central female characters painted in acrylic on watercolour paper. My characters are all dark skinned, powerful with a confident stance. Often in my culture, women are taught to be docile, play small and be virtuous or alternatively be considered a Jezebel of sorts. I depict women in charge of their bodies, empowered and whole in different places, dreamlike or not.
Bio
I am an award-winning multidisciplinary artist who grew up in Shiraz, Iran and later moved to Toronto, Canada. Graduating from OCADU, I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Design. Shortly after, I began working in a corporate environment and after 7 years, decided to dive back into my original passion, visual arts. A few clients I have worked with are TIFF, City of Toronto and Bell Canada. A series of my animated GIFs were featured on the CBC Arts show, Exhibitionists. I also redesigned the CBC Arts logo for the month of October 2021.
I have been creating colourful and whimsical acrylic paintings, digital illustrations, large scale murals and short animations. My style can be described as a combination of Art Deco and Middle Eastern Miniature art with a focus on storytelling and themes revolving love, spirituality and every day life as a woman. I often create pieces that convey a mood and pull the viewer in byway of rich textures, vibration of colours and layers of flowing lines and swirls that bring together a dream-like image which tells a story. Often I portray a central character that’s in deep thought or a state of bliss, away from distractions and worries of everyday life.
