Statement

The Countertenor (created in 2021) - for online and in-gallery exhibition:

Ian is an opera singer who has sung on the streets of Toronto, Montreal and Paris in an effort to raise funds toward his higher musical education.

To hear him sing, you'd think he was a mezzo-soprano. He has a rare male voice that can reach hauntingly moving high notes and swoop down to the lowest notes available in the tenor range.

His voice moved me and wooed me into painting his portrait.

Bio

A former jazz vocalist and stage performer, this experience is a source of inspiration for my abstract portraiture and figurative paintings.

The energy and emotions many performers exude on stage or in rehearsals can be electric. I’m drawn to capturing that essence on canvas through bold use of colour and abstract realism/expressionism to help celebrate, "see" and feel this unique emotional energy.
